National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (or NEET-UG) is a pen-paper based entrance examination for students who want to study any undergraduate or postgraduate course in government or private medical colleges across India. The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions (where a single correct answer for four distinct options). The Question Paper for the test is based on a Common Syllabus notified by the Medical Council of India since 2013. Duration of the exam is three hours. NEET can be attempted at most nine times by a candidate belonging to the unreserved categories and 14 times for a candidate belonging to the reserved and other backward categories.
NEET has replaced the preceding medical entrance test called, All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all other individual MBBS examinations conducted by Indian states or the colleges themselves in 2013.
Initially, the exam was used to be conducted in only English and Hindi languages, which led to widespread opposition from several Indian states. Later it was announced that from 2017, there will be more regional languages for the candidate to take the exam in.
NEET-UG 2018 will be conducted by CBSE nation-wide this year on 6 May.
