what is MCI??

It stands for Medical council of India. MCI is statutory body established in order to maintain uniform and high standards of Medical Education in India. Medical council of India was established in 1993.The MCI Headquarters is in New Delhi (National capital territory).Presently, Medical Council of India leader and president is Jayshreeben Mehta. MCI makes sure that in order to practise in India, doctors must be registered under MCI. In order to protect and promote the health and safety of the public, Medical council of India  ensures that proper standards are maintained during the practice of medicine. MCI keeps a check on the establishment of new medical colleges offering different MBBS/BDS degree and their recognition by giving them permission. MCI also approves the number of student getting admitted in a college and also renews their licenses.

What is NMC or National Medical commission ??

National Medical Commission (NMC) has been recommended by NITI Aayog to replace the existing medical education regulator,MCI to ensure the transparency. Most of the states has welcomed and approved this decision of replacing Medical council of India. Once, getting approval from Prime Minister it will be proposed as final bill in the upcoming parliamentary sessions in order to replace the MCI.

How NMC is formed ??

A search committee is going to select 25 member commission, according to the bill to replace the MCI. Search committee made to select commission to replace Medical council of India is headed by union cabinet secretary. In past, there have been numerous allegations about the functioning of MCI  over the years.

Ranjit Roychowdhury Committee and a Parliamentary standing committee recommended the formation of NMC in order to replace the existing MCI. The Bill also provides for the introduction of a licentiate (exit) examination within three years of its passage by Parliament. Such a move would make the medical sector the first in the country’s higher education system to have a common entrance test (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), counselling and exit examination.

What  students doing MBBS from abroad have to face ??
A similar system is currently in place for foreign medical graduates graduated from colleges recognised by Medical council of India. They have to appear for an examination to be able to practice in India Known as MCI screening test, or FMGE exam and their performance is a ready reckoner on the quality of foreign medical institutions.

What is MCI screening test or FMGE exam??

It is a licensing test need to be given by students who have done their MBBS from Abroad universities recognized by Medical Council of India in order to Practice in India. FMGE test   is conducted twice in a year. First in JUNE and then followed by in December. FMGE exam is conducted by National Board of Examination. Every year over 10,000 thousand student decide to abroad to universities approved by Medical council of India like MBBS in china, MBBS in Philippines, MBBS in Georgia..etc.

What is the pattern of MCI screening exam ??

Medical council of India has designed a curriculum compromising of 19 subjects. One has to take all these subjects in exam and not only the subjects they are good at. The subjects are as follow: Pathology,Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine and ToxicologyMedicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Dermatology and Venereology, Radiology, Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Opthalmology, ENT, PSM, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry.
